Your Work Life: A Marathon or a Sprint?

Whether you’ve spent your life working in a single field or have explored different career paths, you have no doubt developed skills and wisdom along the way. The question is, how does your 100 Year Lifestyle look when it comes to work, wisdom, and leadership? Do you see your work life as a sprint to the retirement finish line or a marathon that will actually keep you mentally, physically, and socially engaged for a long, long time? As is true in all cases, a long-term perspective will keep you living at 100:100, 100% for 100 years…or longer.

Work, Work, and More Work

According to U.S. News & World Report, it’s not uncommon for baby boomers to continue to work into the 60s, 70s, and even 80s. With more and more people adopting 100 Year Lifestyles, health, longevity, and vitality are going hand in hand well beyond set retirement dates. 

While some people continue working for financial reasons, others love what they do and want to continue to help their companies and colleagues or share their knowledge and experience with future leaders. Some want to keep their minds active and dive headlong into their passions by developing a second act career based on their passions. Still others want to stay socially active and contribute by working for non-profit organizations or volunteering their time. 

The Door is Always Open

The fact is, if you’ve been living your 100 Year Lifestyle, your 100 is coming. Do you really want to retire at 65 and then potentially live an additional 35 years (or more) without meaningful work in your life? If the answer is yes, congratulations to you for knowing what you want. However, just be aware that according to a 2017 RAND Corporation survey, almost 40 percent of workers over the age of 65 rejoined the workforce after retiring. Of those still in retirement at the time, almost half said they would return to paid work if the right opportunity presented itself. 

No Expiration Date

Your wisdom, your talents, your leadership skills, your creativity, your value to society – none of these things have an expiration date on them. You should be looking at your work life in the same way you look at all areas of your life, as a marathon. It’s a long, interesting road ahead. We want you to be healthy enough to enjoy and take advantage of every moment.
