Walk into any coffee shop, school, airport, or living room and you will see the same thing: heads down, shoulders rounded forward, eyes glued to phones, tablets, and laptops. We have become a society of screen lookers. While technology has made life more convenient, it has also created one of the most common health challenges I see in practice today – Tech Neck.

The average adult head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds when positioned directly over the shoulders. Research by Dr. Kenneth Hansraj demonstrated that as the head moves forward, the stress on the neck increases dramatically. At 60 degrees of forward flexion, the cervical spine experiences nearly 60 pounds of force. That is the equivalent of carrying a small child around your neck for hours every day.
What Happens Inside the Spine?
When the head consistently remains forward, ligaments become stretched and weakened, muscles become imbalanced, discs experience abnormal compression, and nerves may become irritated. Over time this can contribute to disc degeneration, chronic tension, headaches, reduced mobility, shoulder pain, numbness, tingling, and accelerated wear and tear throughout the spine.
The Youngest Arthritic Spine I Have Ever Seen
One of the most memorable cases I have encountered was an 11-year-old girl with no history of major injury. No car accidents. No sports trauma. Yet imaging revealed arthritic changes in her cervical spine. The most significant contributing factor was years spent looking down at tablets and phones. The problem was not one major injury. It was thousands of hours of repetitive micro-stress that gradually changed the structure and function of her spine.

Structural Correction: Catch It Early
We see both adults and children with spinal curve and posture issues that can develop after years of living in this forward-head, rounded-shoulder position. The earlier we catch these patterns, the easier it is to actually correct them. The longer the spine stays in the wrong shape and structure, the more stress it places on the joints, discs, muscles, ligaments, and nervous system. If we do not correct the structure, we should expect the spine to continue breaking down over time. That decay is called degeneration, and when it happens early, we begin seeing arthritic changes in children that used to be more common in people decades older. Now imagine what that looks like long term. Years of abnormal stress in the wrong structure can increase the likelihood of chronic pain, disability, and even surgical conversations later in life. This is also why we take the nervous system seriously. Poor spinal structure can create ongoing neurological stress. For some people, that stress may show up as neck pain, headaches, muscle tension, numbness,
tingling, anxiety-like stress responses, or problems related to autonomic imbalance, including digestion and immune regulation. The spine protects the nervous system, and when structure breaks down, function often follows.
