Keep Doing Constructive Things

Minnie Payne got her undergraduate degree at 73. Now, at 90, she set a record at the University of North Texas as the oldest graduate student, earning her master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies. Might sound like a stretch, but it’s all part of Minnie’s life philosophy and intention to keep doing constructive things with her life.
Coming from what she describes as a “poor” family, Minnie was only able to attend one year of junior college before having to start work. Marriage and family quickly followed.
The years passed and when she retired at 68, she realized that she wasn’t doing anything constructive with her life, and that wasn’t acceptable. So, she started on her academic journey, first earning her bachelor’s degree alongside students decades younger than her.
Now, armed with her master’s, Minnie has taken a job with a local Houston magazine. Her plan is to put into practice what she’s learned. Her long-term plan? To keep working as long as she is physically and mentally able.
Clearly, Minnie has taken the idea of lifelong education to a whole different level. But, why not? She says she’s always wanted to better herself, and there’s no time like the present!
What’s holding you back from pursuing your dreams and goals? If it’s your age, Minnie just gave you something to think about.
