According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s. That’s 1 in 9 people aged 65 and older. It is estimated that by 2050, the number will grow to 12.7 million. Yet the authors of a new book, The Alzheimer’s Solution:  A Breakthrough Program to Prevent and Reverse the Symptoms of Cognitive Decline at Every Age, say most Alzheimer’s cases are preventable. Based on their research, 90% of us can avoid getting Alzheimer’s in the first place.

Authors Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherazi are co-directors of The Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University. Loma Linda is a 7th Day Adventist community and the only U.S. designated Blue Zone. While Alzheimer’s is currently the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., the rates of the disease in Loma Linda are extremely low.

Lifestyle

Today many people believe that Alzheimer’s has to do with genetics. Most people think that you can’t do anything about it if you’re going to get it, or once you get it. However, when the Sherazi’s looked at the numbers in Loma Linda and nationally, they realized that Alzheimer’s can be prevented, and the way it can be prevented has to do with how we take care of ourselves.

Their resulting NEURO plan has everything to do with lifestyle. The plan focuses on nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, and social interaction. All of these things are what the Sherazi’s call “brain-healthy habits,” and they are also part of the 100 Year Lifestyle.

The 100 Year Lifestyle is all about living at 100% for 100 years or more, and that includes with your mind, body, and spirit fully functioning. Since we first created The 100 Year Lifestyle, much research, studies, and prominent institutions have also come out in support of healthy lifestyle choices for living life at 100%.

100 Year Lifestyle

But even before this supporting information, your 100 Year Lifestyle has always been about:

Living a healthy, passionate, prosperous life, every day of your life, for 100 years and beyond
Great relationships with multiple generations and multiple circles of people
Lifelong learning, activity, and adventure
Keeping your nervous system functioning without interference so you can adapt to your environment and function at your full potential
Financial freedom, abundance, and independence

Maximizing your innate capabilities and making the most of your time, energy, and talents
Keeping your body functioning at full capacity and keeping your mind sharp
Accepting challenges, embracing change, and adapting to the unexpected

In the forward to their book Drs. Sherazi say, “If all of us – doctors, patients, and leading researchers – understand that our lifestyle choices have a profound impact on cognitive function, we can abandon a wasteful approach doomed for failure, and we can stop the needless suffering.” Based on our long-term experience, they aren’t wrong.
